Starters Series 중 Hal을 주인공으로 한 일기 형식으로 쓰여진 책 중의 하나입니다.

Hal the Highway, Hal the pirate는 June Crebbin이 쓴 chapter book입니다.

부자가 되고 싶어 하는 Hal은 노상강도가 되어도 봤지만 결국은 빈털터리로 남게 됩니다.

그러던 중 해적 학교를 들어가면 부자가 될 수 있다는 광고를 보고 드디어 해적선으로 가게 됩니다.

선장인 Blackbeard는 힘든 훈련을 시켰고 시험까지 칩니다.

드디어 해도를 맡게 되고 또 키도 인계 받으며 항해를 하게 됩니다.

스페인 상선을 만나게 되었고 배 밑에서 보물을 발견하게 됩니다.

많은 보물을 갖게 된 Hal은 실수로 발목에 줄을 감고 헛디디면서
물속으로 빠지게 되었습니다.

다시 떠올랐을 땐 빈털터리가 되어 버렸습니다.

정당한 방법이 아닌 남에게 해를 입혀가며 자기의 꿈을 이루는 것은 옳지 않은 행동입니다.

자신의 꿈을 소신있게 이루기 위해 어떤 생각과 행동을 해야하는지를 잘 생각해 보게 하는 책입니다.

Hal the Highwayman의 작가 June Crebbin은 수 많은 작품과 다양한 분야의 활동에도 불구하고 정작 자신의 biography는 거의 공개하고 있지 않습니다.

Children's books 작가 이전에 시인으로 더 잘 알려진 Crebbin은 1971년부터 본격적인 집필 활동을 시작했으며, 1990년 일찌감치 은퇴하여 지금은 시와 동화를 포함한 다양한 분야의 글쓰기에 전념하고 있습니다.
글쓰기에 전념하기 위해 은퇴를 하기 전에는 preschool에서 학생을 가르치기도 했으며, 그 때의 경험이 그녀의 호평 받는 Children's book 시리즈를 집필할 수 있었던 좋은 바탕이 되었습니다.

Hal the Highwayman을 포함해서 그녀의 대표적인 Children's book은 The Train Ride와 Fly by Night가 있습니다.
